Professor Robert Lo: Brush and Ink Workshop

The "Brush and Ink Workshop" taught by Professor Robert Lo was conducted at the St. Louis Art Museum on March 16, 2002. Because of Professor Lo's highly respected reputation and education background, the class immediately filled to capacity with artists eager to learn the art of Chinese ink painting from such an accomplished artist.
Gloria Fuchs, Coordinator of Adult Courses at the St. Louis Art Museum, began the class by introducing Professor Lo and his translator, Chan-Ru Chang. Agendas outlining the one-day workshop were handed out along with copies of Robert's ink drawings that would be practiced during the class. |

To illustrate Chinese ink paintings, Professor Lo presented slides of his landscape paintings from China and Taiwan. These paintings embodied the subtle beauty of the Chinese ink paintings. Questions and answers from students during the presentation were concerning applications of the ink, line, and tones.
Professor Lo began his demonstration by showing variations of trees. Using rice paper, wolf and goat hair brushes, ink stick and ink stone, his brush glided effortless across the paper showing years of dedicated practice. The workshop participants practiced their ink painting as Professor Lo gave individual attention to each student. |

The class included how to properly hold a brush and the care of them. He instructed the class to make circular motion toward yourself when rubbing the ink stone so that the good karma would come to you. Students using a quick stroke of ink transformed a blank paper into a tranquil landscapes and delicate flowers.
The students discovered the enchantment of Chinese ink painting and its ability to capture the elegance of nature. As Professor Lo says it is our predestined meetings with the Great Earth that helps us manifests its beauty. |
