Dr.
Joel Glassman is Director of the Center for International Studies and Associate Professor
of Political Science, University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Dr. Glassman received his Ph.D. in 1974 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, after
completing his dissertation on educational policy in China. His current research interests
include: education in China, U.S. foreign policy in East Asia, and U.S. economic relations
with the Pacific Rim countries.
As Director of the Center for International Studies, Dr. Glassman provides administrative
leadership and exercises responsibility for planning and coordinating the comprehensive
international education program of the University, in consultation with the Chancellor and
other University officials. He is Director of University E. Desmond Lee Global Ethnic
Collaborative which works to strengthen cultural harmony and mutual understanding and
prepare St. Louis for success in the global marketplace. Also, he serves as Co-Director of
the Joint Center for East Asian Studies of UM-St. Louis and Washington University.
In addition, Dr. Glassman has served for many years as President of the Nanjing-St. Louis
Sister Cities committee and worked with other community organizations to promote interest
in China and East Asia.
