26. Pizza, at last!

Day 17

The only junk food we found in China was McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut -- all 'gifts' from the US. Our tour guide explained that the children love it, but the parents and grandparents prefer the children eat traditional Chinese food. Lord knows it is healthier for them. We certainly know how to fatten up the world!

BeiJing had some 57 McDonalds Restaurants, plus KFCs and Pizza Huts -- more than any other place in mainland China. And already there seems to be a noticeable difference in the amount of fat children are carrying. The only obese child we saw in China was in BeiJing.

At 4:00 PM, Carl, Glenda, Virginia and Bill took the underground walkway again to get across the busy JianGuoMenWai DaJie. We were told there was a Pizza Hut over there and we were determined to find it. And, yes, there was!

The entire restaurant was an add-on to the front of the building. It was hardly wide enough for two tables across but was very long.

Our tongues were hanging out for the pizza which Bill had been saying would be delivered about 11:00 PM each evening -- jokingly, of course. When we got into Pizza Hut, we were told they would accept only Chinese money. That was a problem! With our departure tomorrow, we were trying to avoid having to exchange Chinese for US, so we were down to small change. The four of us pooled our money and Carl spoke with the manager to learn what it would buy. It came to enough for two 12" pizzas and a pitcher of Pepsi. We are happy to say the pizza was everything we had hoped for.

With our tummies full once again, we walked back to the hotel to pack and rest for the rest of the evening. Tomorrow afternoon, we leave for home.
